Achievements of Fisheries
Vietnam's seafood industry has seen significant progress thanks to aquaculture expansion, sustainable fishing practices and technological improvements.
As a world-leading producer, Vietnam’s aquaculture industry, particularly shrimp, pangasius (catfish) and tilapia, has grown rapidly, with the Mekong Delta becoming a key hub thanks to modern farming techniques. Integrated farming systems such as rice-fish farming optimize resources and increase productivity. Efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing have strengthened the legal framework, aligned with international standards and improved market access. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) such as Con Dao National Park and Nha Trang Bay help conserve marine biodiversity. Technological advances in hatcheries, feed production and disease management have increased productivity, while modern fishing gear has improved efficiency and safety. Research institutes such as the Research Institute for Aquaculture (RIA) have played a key role in promoting fish farming and sustainable practices. Vietnam is the world's leading seafood exporter, with significant contributions to the national economy and annual seafood export value reaching over 8 billion USD.
Investment in processing industries has increased product value and diversified services, improving competitiveness. Comprehensive legal and policy frameworks support sustainable practices, while community-based fisheries management empowers local communities. Infrastructure development, including cold storage and marketing facilities, has improved market access and income for small-scale fishers. Environmental initiatives promote environmentally friendly practices and mangrove restoration, while social initiatives ensure fisherfolk welfare.
These achievements underscore Vietnam's commitment to sustainable fisheries development and economic resilience.
