Achievements of Mining
Vietnam's mining industry has made significant strides through the establishment of large-scale operations, integration of technology and sustainable practices.
State-owned Vinacomin has played a key role in developing the coal industry, operating large mines in Quang Ninh province such as Hon Gai and Cam Pha, contributing significantly to domestic energy demand and export earnings. The development of bauxite mines in the Central Highlands, including the Tan Rai and Nhan Co projects, has been the foundation for the development of the emerging aluminium industry. Vietnam is the world's leading producer of titanium minerals, with mines developed in coastal provinces such as Binh Thuan. The country also holds significant rare earth reserves, the second largest in the world in terms of total reserves, particularly in Lai Chau province, where mining plays a key role as a cornerstone of Vietnam's development strategy in the technology sector. Gold and copper mining has also made progress, with the Bong Mieu and Phuoc Son gold mines and the Sin Quyen copper mine in Lao Cai province. Technological advances have improved efficiency and safety in mining operations, with automation and remote sensing technologies improving accuracy.
Modern environmental management practices, such as land reclamation and waste management, reflect the industry’s commitment to sustainability. Investment in processing facilities adds value to mined minerals, strengthening Vietnam’s position in the global market. Mining laws and favorable policies have attracted significant foreign investment, promoting modernization, international cooperation, research and skilled human resources development, technological innovation and sustainable development practices in the mining sector. These achievements highlight Vietnam’s commitment to developing the mining industry while promoting sustainable development.
