Boating excursion on Nhieu Loc canal, Ho Chi Minh City

Since 2015, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism opened an inner-city waterway tourism route on the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal. The route has a route of 4.5 km, starting from Thi Nghe bridge (district 1) to Chantaransay pagoda (district 3). Local leaders said that the boat tour is a new product of the city to improve the quality of service for people.

With a length of 8.7km and a width of about 60m, the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal flows through districts 1, 3, Tan Binh, Phu Nhuan and Binh Thanh, where most of the city's typical architectural landscape is concentrated. There will be 10 rowing tourist boats, each with a capacity of about 20 people, taking tourists on a scenic tour on both sides of the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal (the section from the Botanical Garden to near Vinh Nghiem Pagoda) for about 2 hours. When the water is favorable, the boat will carry passengers continuously from early morning to 11:00 p.m. every day. Because some bridges across the canal are low, the boat is designed to be only about 1 meter high to be able to pass through the canal.

There are two types of boats serving visitors. The high-end type includes 10 Phung boats, accommodating from 2 to 6 people. Staff will row at the request of guests. Drinks and music will be served on the boat. Ticket price is about 220,000 VND per person. The budget boat can accommodate from 7 to 20 guests, not including a tour guide and rower. Guests can bring food and drinks and receive music upon request. Ticket price is about 110,000 VND. 

The exploitation unit said that the special feature of tourist boats on this canal is the use of oars, limiting the use of engines to ensure the living environment of all kinds of fish. The boat moves at a slow speed, visitors can admire and hear stories about the formation and development of the Nhieu Loc canal and the history of Saigon. The Department of Tourism will complete the service and officially put it into operation next month. 

In addition to this route, the city also plans to open a nearly 11 km long Bach Dang - Linh Dong river route and a more than 10 km long Bach Dang - Lo Gom route. Nhieu Loc Canal started the process of regaining its green color in 2012 with a budget of 8,600 billion VND, but littering causing pollution is threatening the process of greening the canal. Recently, the canal has shown signs of pollution again, tens of thousands of fish have died.
